Grenzibierge”

Herendain and Feren were warriors in the days of old. They lived in a realm called Nordland. It was a beautiful place with rolling hills and golden fields spanning hundreds of miles.

Herendain came from the region of Sudenland which was in the south of the nation. He had grown up in a wealthy family of merchants and warriors. He had travelled all over Nordland and the realms far away. He became a respected captain of the High King's army.

Feren was a person of the north who lived in the city of Nordstadt. The fortress Nordstadt overlooked the enemy realm of Thirendaugh. Feren was the son of the governor of Nordstadt, but he was the second born and could not obtain the throne.

Then one day the nation of Reviorn attacked Nordland. Reviorn agents had brought about a revolt in the east lands of Nordland. Herendain and Feren were summoned to the capitol. There they were assigned a mission to bring an army to relieve a fort in the mountains to the east.

They gladly accepted.

Feren and Herndain had never met before. They were from different places in Nordland. Now they had to lead an army across the fields to the fortress of Greinzebirge.

Hello, I presume that you are Herendain?Feren said with a bit of envy in his voice. He was not prepared to share command with a oreignerfrom the south.

I am Herendain, Captain of the south. You must be Feren, what an interesting name. You are from the north I presume?Herendain replied. He stood tall and did not want to show any weakness.

Feren was impressed. He now accepted the young Captain. He got out a map and showed Herendain what he believed was the right way to approach the enemy that had besieged the fortress. from what our spies tell us, the enemy camp is on a hill to the south of the fortress,Feren said, think that we should split our forces in two and attack on both flanks.

That is a well thought out idea. On the contrary, my spies a have reported that there is a large Reviorn army to the east that is about four thousand strong and will be across the pass and able to reinforce the attackers in three days.Herendain said. I believe that we should split our forces and then I will go and defend the pass with my archers and pike men and you should go and sneak around the west pass and into the fort to relieve it.

I agree completely,Feren said.

Herendain went with six hundred men to defend the pass. It was situated in the mountains and there was a cobblestone highway through the pass. There were two red redoubt overlooking the pass. Here Herendain situated his archers and he put his pike men at an incline on the highway. Then they waited. Herendain rode up the highway on his horse with his bodyguards. He looked down the road and could see a black mass coming down the highway. The enemy was about half a mile away and he had time to rally his men. He spoke to them from the highway. The archers looked down over the wall.

We must defend this pass or the enemy will succeed in capturing the fortress. We are the first defense for our country. They could destroy our whole great nation and our way of life. We might be outnumbered but we will fight to the death.Herendain spoke. He then rode up behind the pike men and dismounted. He joined the ranks and picked up a spear.

The enemy came over the hill. The archers on the hills lit their arrows and stretched their bows. It was now dark and only the stars illuminated the night. There was no moon. The archers fired. The arrows illuminated the night with an eerie golden glow. They penetrated into the enemy ranks and killed many. Still, the enemy kept walking. They then stopped. The enemy troops started to clear an alley through the ranks, and hundreds of cavalry poured out like a faucet. They took out their spears and charged uphill toward the pike men.

Herendain called out to the pike men display pikes! The wall of men then shifted. The men in front got down on their knees and the men behind them put out their weapons. This created an almost impenetrable wall of pikes.

Herendain hoped this line would hold, as he was also counting on a allied army from Lordon to approach from the east, behind the enemy.

The enemy cavalry charged onward. The archers on the hill tried in vain to stop them, but they did not succeed. The cavalry drove into the pikes and was stopped. Many fell and died. There was a lot of carnage. The pike men then put down their pikes and got out their swords. They then pulled the enemy from their steeds and slaughtered them. Because they were horsemen they let the horses free. They then reformed ranks and stood and waited. They looked at the enemy. The Reviorn troops had lost their general and now were wavering.

However, they soon reformed their ranks and launched a full charge at the Nordland ranks. The pike men picked up their pikes and met the enemy head on. The forces clashed. The archers on the hill shot volley after volley into the enemy. The enemy still fought on and made progress up the hill. The archers then formed around the gap and took out their swords. They formed a line with the pike men and engaged the enemy. They fought long and hard and finally the enemy fell back. As the enemy started back up the highway in the direction from which they came, Herendain's hopes were confirmed, as the enemy was met by the allied army from Lordon. After a brief engagement, the Lordanian cavalry routed them.

Herendain walked down the hill with his troops. Even though they had fought for a long time the men were still energetic and walked with their heads high. Herendain met the Lordanian general and shook his hand. I was not expecting you to show up, but I guess you were late as usual,Herendain said with a smile.

You look like you needed some help,General Ardian said. But we handled it. The Reviorn army is no match for our knights.”

Yes, you impress us every time with your cavalry might,Herndain replied.

We now shall go relieve the fortress? That is what your mission was, was it not?Ardian said.

The two armies then converged and started marching to the fortress. They were about three thousand strong.

It was now dawn. When they reached the valley where the fortress was, they could see the enemy troops that had broken through the first wall. There were fires raging in the town and black smoke was billowing through the air. Defeat seemed imminent.

But, from the hill they were on, General Aridian and Herendain's armies had an advantage. Aridian called out to his men in their language and they charged down into the enemy. They punched through and split the enemy force in two. Then Herendain went with his men across the hill and fought through to the gate and got inside. There were many Nordland troops holding the gate closed. Others were lying on the ground dead, wounded, or exhausted.

Herendain sent his pike men to reinforce the door and his archers to the wall. He then went up into the keep up in the side of the mountain. There he then found Feren. Feren was talking to another captain and they were looking at a map. Herendain then walked up to them and stood at the table and looked at the map. Feren then asked, what happened at the pass?”

We stopped them and met Ardian. He then came with us here.”

He was late, probably”

As usual”

They then exited the room and went down to the wall. There they rallied the troops and fought off the enemy until they retreated. The Nordland troops then exited the Fortress and chased the enemy for a bit. The Lordanians were still mopping up the area.

Ardian came up to Herendain and Feren. well, they have been chased away and no longer pose a threat. I guess we saved you once again. But the victory here will be short lived. I have just received a runner from the south who tells us that the enemy has just invaded our city of Cair Feredor.

We will get our troops ready,Feren said.

They then marched out of the fortress with two thousand men. Ready for another battle.
